LRS CiS - Custom 3D-Printed Ankle Fusion Cage

LRS, together with Prof. Maritz Laubscher (Department of Orthopaedics, Groote Schuur Hospital), designed a custom Ti6Al4V truss cage for use in an ankle fusion. The operation was performed at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town.

A cement spacer and external fixator were initially fitted to the patient in order to treat the underlying infection. A CT of the patient's ankle was performed. LRS used this CT to design the cage to fit the existing defect without any further bone resection required. The cage was filled with bone graft harvested from the patient's femoral canal. Compression of the fusion was provided by a Zimmer-Biomet Phoenix Nail.

LRS is excited to be able to provide this cutting edge technology in South Africa in both the private and state sector.
