LRS CiS - Custom 3D-Printed Femoral Truss Cage

Updated: Sep 14, 2021

LRS designed and manufactured a custom Titanium Truss Cage to bridge a 75mm mid-shaft femoral defect. The cage was used for the treatment of a pathological fracture following osteitis of the femur.

The case was planned in close collaboration with Prof. Maritz Laubscher (Groote Schuur Hospital and Life Vincent Pallotti Hospital, Cape Town), who also performed the surgery. The patient's CT data was used for the design, and the implant was then 3D printed in Ti6Al4V.

The cage is designed to accommodate a 10mm diameter intramedullary nail for fixation. The reamings from the intramedullary canal were packed into the cage to aid bone growth. The trusses of the cage have a rough surface finish to encourage osseointegration.

LRS sees great potential in these truss cages as a treatment option for cases of segmental bone loss, or for joint fusions.
