LRS CiS – Custom 3D Printed TiTruss Ankle Fusion Cage

LRS, together with Prof. Graham McCollum (Dept. of Orthopaedics, Groote Schuur Hospital), designed a custom ankle fusion cage for a patient with a collapsed talus.

The implant was designed using the patient’s CT scan to generate a custom TiTruss cage, filling the space left behind by the removed talar body. It was taken into account that the talar head would be kept in place. The TiTruss cage was then 3D printed in Ti6Al4V. It was designed to accommodate an intramedullary nail for fixation and compression. The cage was filled with bone graft which, together with the rough surface finish on the trusses, encourages osseointegration.

We are excited to be a part of a team that can provide the latest in custom implant designs to our clients and are looking forward to continuing doing so.
